Ready or not, here comes summer!

Looking at the school calendar yesterday, I began to realize how full these last few weeks of school are, with celebrations and parties and special events. Roll on summer! Not sure, though, if I’m ready for it…Doesn’t it seem to be coming too fast on the heels of scrambling to buy start-of-school student supplies (was that really 9 months ago?).

The end of the year at Country Day brings with it a lot of emotions. As their hormones and emotions sense that the brain’s shifting gears for the summer, otherwise well- behaved students get either too energetic, way too cranky, oh so cool, or even testy… I know you’ve seen it, but who can blame them?

We’ve had an active spring, with the all-school Field Day, the Country Day Fair, Finale Forte, Merry Meeting, Senior Day for our PMK, and the end-of-year LS instrumental concerts. Yet to come, there’s Medieval Day, the end-of-year class picnic (in the plural if you have more than one child in lower school!) and, of course, the end-of-year Farewell Assembly for fifth grade before we all actually reach the end of the school year. Phew!

With so much celebrating, it’s a full dance card, and with so many chances to say good-bye or thank you, it’s sometimes hard to stick to routine and structured days. Summer, too, can be a little less structured and differently paced, but I’ve learned to go with the flow and not worry– my daughter reminds me that hot summer’s the time to, “Chill, Mom.”

It really is hard to believe that we are getting close to the end of the school year again – and the end of my fifth year at Country Day. Thank you to all the wonderful students I get to spend each day with, kudos to the incredible teachers who daily create such engaging learning environments, a bow to Carolyn Chandler for her continued faith in me, and a large thank you to you, CD parents for entrusting your most precious possession to me every day. I am humbled by the joy that is Country Day.

Enjoy your summer and mark the calendar for the first day of lower school – Orientation Day is Wednesday, August 17th. Just around the corner! See you then!
