A Note from Upper School Principal Howard Barton - Registering for Courses

Dear Parents,

This week at our Tuesday Upper School assembly and during parent meetings on Wednesday morning and evening, I explained the policies and procedures for registering for courses for next school year, 2016-2017. (On Friday, I will meet with this year's eighth graders to help them get started on this part of their upper school experience.)  In "Important Downloads" on the Upper School page of CD Connect, which you can reach by logging in and going to the drop-down menu under Groups and selecting "Upper School Parents," you can find the information I provided at those meetings (or you can just click here after logging in).

What you will find is a PowerPoint called 2016-2017 Course Registration which will take you through the process. You will also find a 30-page word document called Program of Studies 2016-17 which contains information about graduation requirements, sequencing of course work, policies regarding academics, and course descriptions of all the courses we offer. A better place to start, however, may be the Program of Studies Summary 2016-17 which is just three pages pulled from the longer document.

It is always exciting, and daunting, to think about the future, and that is what makes course registration more than simply a routine exercise. Our teachers and advisors put a lot of time into considering what is best for each student, but we know that we cannot do a complete job without input from students and parents. That is why the registration process (and the form) are designed as it is; the advisor signs the form after the student and parent. We have an incredibly rich and varied curriculum for our students. Please do not hesitate to call your child's advisor or specific teachers if you have any questions. Also, please contact me if you need assistance. We want to do what is best for each child.

Howard Barton
Upper School Principal
