A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

Students in Ms. Steckler's 8th grade French class engaged in an exciting "Picture Talk" today courtesy of Mr. Young. Mr. Young shared a feature of The New York Times with the faculty called "What's Going on in this Picture" geared to get students talking about what they see in a photo stripped of its caption. In a World Language classroom, students can use the target language to answer questions about the photo. This reinforces basic vocabulary and provides an opportunity to use more sophisticated grammar structures and verb tenses. Today, students spoke in French about how the man under the piano had recently lost his job as a stock market broker. They suggested that the photo was ironically taken on Wall Street. Learning about La Bourse ended up being a teachable moment.
