Frederic, a young pirate apprentice, reaches the age of 21, which releases him from his indentures to the Pirate King. Finally free to live as he wishes, Frederic rejects the companionship of his childhood nursemaid Ruth and falls in love with Mabel, one of the many, many daughters of the blustering Major General Stanley. But when the Pirate King returns with a merry band of pirates to claim those same daughters for their wives, everyone becomes ensnared in a tangled web of comic complications. As Mabel enlists the help of a bumbling Sergeant of Police and his frightened force to stand up to the pirates, Ruth rejoins the pirate band with a devilish secret that threatens to turn Frederic's world upside-down. Filled with memorable melodies, farcical follies, and peculiar paradoxes, THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE is a jolly, joyous comedy caper for the whole family!

Originally produced in 1879, The Pirates of Penzance is a theatrical classic that has been popular for close to 150 years. In 1980, Joseph Papp of the Public Theatre conceived a new production for the New York Shakespeare Festival. This revival was a huge success, transferring to Broadway for nearly 800 performances, earning three Tony Awards, and leading to a cult-hit film adaptation. Our production of The Pirates of Penzance is also a salute to Country Day tradition, as Gilbert and Sullivan shows were a hallmark of the theatre program here for many years. The poster design for this production is an adaptation of an original design by Works Progress Administration artist James H. Murphy for a Federal Theatre Project production of The Pirates of Penzance at the Cincinnati Federal Theatre, April 1937.
