  • Athletic Trainers

Athletic trainers are health care providers who specialize in the prevention, assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers and health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and safe participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.

To become certified athletic trainers, students must graduate with bachelors or masters degree from an accredited professional athletic training education program and pass a comprehensive test administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified, they must meet ongoing continuing education requirements in order to remain certified.
  • Athletic Training Coverage

Metairie Park Country Day employs a full time certified athletic trainer available during normal school hours as well as after school, and present at all home events and practices. Our athletic trainer travels with teams as deemed necessary; however, if unable to do so, medical coverage is coordinated at away events to provide adequate care for Country Day student-athletes.

Continuing education is essential to remain current in the field of sports medicine. Our staff regularly attends local, regional, and national sports medicine conferences, workshops, and symposiums. In turn, the staff educates not only athletes and coaches in the prevention and care of injuries, but also serves as a resource to Country Day students, parents, faculty and staff. In addition, educational opportunities and practical experiences are provided for our students.
The sports medicine department has a written emergency action plan in place to deal with medical emergencies. This plan is communicated with all coaches and athletic staff. Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED’s) are located at various places around campus in the event of a life threatening cardiac emergency.

All coaches are certified in CPR with First Aid and AED Training and in Concussion Management. Opportunities for certification and renewal are provided by the Metairie Park Country Day certified athletic trainer. Please email Katherine Miller at
  • Curriculum

Metairie Park Country Day offers opportunities for students to advance their knowledge in the field of sports medicine. As sophomores, students take First Aid and CPR with Automated External Defibrillator (AED) Training. A basic athletic training practicum in sports medicine is designed to give interested students practical experience in the field. This is held after school so students can gain hands on experience in the athletic training room.

The science department offers Anatomy and Physiology as an elective for students who desire further study in sports medicine-related topics. In addition, a Student Athletic Trainer Program is available for those students wishing to further their commitment to the sports medicine program. These students commit to working at least one season (fall, winter, spring) with Country Day athletes during practices and games under the supervision of the Country Day athletic trainer.
