Upper School Art: Shading, Value, and Portraiture

What a great way to learn value and shading! Mrs. Haysley's students made paper airplanes and drew them as they landed (yes, after throwing them in class). After a discussion of value application and charcoal, students used white charcoal on black paper to make their paper airplanes appear 3-dimensional. Then, in Mrs. Haysley's Honors Art class, students studied the intense use of contrast in portraiture.  Students used dark shadows next to brighter highlights to emphasize the intense emotions portrayed by the subject.
