Herzenberg ‘26 Named Gatorade Boys' Track & Field Player of the Year, Now in the Running for National Honor

Gatorade Player of the Year is widely regarded as the most prestigious award in high school sports, recognizing the nation's top student-athletes for their achievements on the field, in the classroom, and in their communities. First awarded in 1985, the program selects one Gatorade State Player of the Year in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia across 12 sports. From that pool of state winners, only 12 Gatorade National Players of the Year are chosen — one per sport, representing the very best in the country. As part of the honor, Gatorade presents each winner with a $1,000 grant to donate to a youth sports organization of their choice.

A Dominant Senior Season

A 6-foot, 175-pound standout, Herzenberg swept the javelin and discus at the LHSAA Class 2A State Championships this season, capturing his fourth consecutive state title in the javelin with a throw of 186 feet that ranked among the best marks in the metro area regardless of classification. He also placed sixth in the state in discus, with a top throw of 132 feet, 9 inches, earning him All-Metro recognition in both events.

His biggest throw of the year came at the Summer Sizzle Throws Meet, where Herzenberg launched the javelin 229 feet, 0 inches, a mark that ranked No. 1 nationally among prep boys this spring and No. 16 in national prep history. That throw also stands as the Catholic District javelin record.

Beyond the throwing circle, Herzenberg's athletic versatility earned him an All-State selection in boys soccer.

Excelling in the Classroom

Herzenberg has paired his athletic success with strong academic performance, maintaining a 4.15 weighted GPA throughout his high school career. This fall, he continues his athletic and academic journey at the University of Nebraska, where he has signed a written letter of athletic aid to compete on scholarship.

Giving Back to the Community

Herzenberg's impact extends well beyond athletics and academics. He has volunteered locally with the Saint Bernard Project, a New Orleans-based disaster recovery nonprofit, and has donated his time to the Special Olympics through Jefferson Parish Schools. He also serves as co-chair of the annual Barkus Parade, which raises funds to support animal welfare.

As a Gatorade State Player of the Year, Herzenberg now joins an elite group of finalists under consideration for the Gatorade National Boys' Track and Field Athlete of the Year award.
