Family-Style Dining

Students Prepare for a meal in the Coleman Family Dining Room

Welcome to a dining experience that’s more than just a meal—it's a tradition that builds community and lifelong memories.

Our focus on community and tradition shines in the Coleman Family Dining Room, where students, faculty, and parents gather for family-style meals just as they did when the school opened in 1929. From Lower School students eagerly dashing to lunch with their new table numbers scribbled on their hands to Middle and Upper School students scanning the latest seating charts, the excitement around our dining experience begins well before stepping into this cherished space.

In the Coleman Family Dining Room, tables are set for interaction between students from various grades who sit with their “table family,” sharing a meal on tables with china, utensils, and white tablecloths. Each table includes a student server who receives the day’s meal from the kitchen to be served family-style, encouraging students to pass and share dishes. Faculty and staff join tables to foster mature conversations and reinforce manners, creating a family dinner atmosphere, while older students help younger ones who in turn, learn from their older mentors. At the end of the meal, everyone pitches in to clear the table, readying it for the next group.

The entrance offers fresh produce available all day, a sandwich bar, and a refrigerator stocked with milk, yogurt, cheese, and apple sauce. Alongside the hot meal of the day, our world-class salad bar features over 70 items daily, including a hot soup, a vegetarian entree, and alternative menu options.

The dining experience nurtures a sense of responsibility, community, commitment, and self-confidence in students while fostering cross-grade level relationships that are integral to our community. Our on-site chef and dining team ensure meals are well-balanced, delicious, and reflective of our culture and community, prioritizing health, nutrition, flavor, creativity, quality, local sourcing, and balance.

Lunch at Country Day is a surprise to most people coming from other schools. It’s a great thing to have someone to sit with automatically, and it opens you up to friendships across the whole school, not just your grade.

A Taste of Country Day at Home

We are excited to share a cherished Country Day recipe from campus, allowing you to bring a taste of our unique dining experience into your home! Despite the fact that the traditional day to fix this southern favorite is Monday, it is served every other Tuesday at Country Day. Students and faculty alike garnish their meal with a wide array of condiments including, but not limited to!) vinegar, Tabasco sauce, and croutons. Any alumni will assure you that not even a gourmet cook can make red beans and rice like Country Day's!
