History & Geography

History study starts in Pre-K in the form of social studies related to a child’s personal experiences and understanding of their relationship with self, home and family, then to neighborhoods, communities, and the larger world. Traditions, customs, community awareness, and geography are frequent topics. History becomes more of a central subject after Pre-K, and each subsequent school year focuses on a specific year-long theme. 

Year-long themes include Louisiana History, Global Middle Ages, and Ancient Egypt with an overview of early humans, imparting learning through the study of art, architecture, daily and family life, mythology, and literature. 

Semester-long themes in these classrooms involve the study of Greece and Rome, followed by ancient India and China.

The year-long theme in this grade involves the beginnings of the Americas, imparting knowledge about the various Indigenous groups that were here long ago. The students begin by investigating the characteristics of a civilization and move on to the beginnings of the Americas, learning about the various Indigenous groups that inhabited them. They delve into the other people who came to these lands and how an exchange of knowledge, food, animals, language, and many other things impacted their world back then and has been carried over to the present day. Students critically examine the information, making connections between the past and the present. They are guided to consider different points of view and encouraged to support their thinking with historical evidence. Throughout this study, students use map skills and learn the impact of geography on humans and vice versa.
