The Katrina Decade: Images of an Altered City by David G. Spielman

Longtime New Orleans resident and professional photographer Spielman (Katrinaville Chronicles) builds on his earlier volume by chronicling the state of little-seen New Orleans neighborhoods ten years after the disaster. His goal is to document the environment as he observed it, and the results challenge the media narrative that the city has largely rebuilt in the years following Katrina. The resulting black-and-white compilation is a stunning portrayal of urban decay: homes gutted by looting, water, and time, some of which are slowly being reclaimed by nature. Despite the sadness that the majority of the images evoke, they also represent hope and renewal as residents go about their lives and children play basketball next to abandoned homes. Short essays from Lawrence (director of museum programs, Historic New Orleans Collection) on the history of architectural photography in the Crescent City, and journalist Davis (president, Tribune Interactive) on the evolution of the city during and after Katrina provide additional background. VERDICT: A haunting yet powerful collection that will please both photography lovers and history enthusiasts.Rebekah Kati, Durham, NC
