At the heart of Middle School is our Advisory program. Each teacher serves as an advisor to a small group of students. The Advisor meets several times during the week with his or her group of advisees and meets with advisees individually. Among other things, seventh and eighth grade advisors teach the Decisions and Interactions curriculum, a program focusing on the hard choices students must make as they grow up. Classes talk about subjects ranging from saying no to alcohol and drugs to dating and peer-relation skills.
Advisors also oversee academic success or concern for advisees and help students prepare for student-led parent conferences. The Advisor serves as a liaison with school families. Parents have repeatedly expressed how meaningful conference time is when their child's advisor communicates from genuine understanding of the overall picture for each student.
The Middle School has a counselor available to speak with students and parents when the need arises. Adolescence is a challenging time of personal, physical, and intellectual change. A counselor who specializes in the needs of middle school students is an invaluable member of the education team.
