The Middle School is a wonderful bridge between the Lower and Upper Divisions, with faculty and staff who nurture and challenge your children during this unique stage of their development. We encourage students to take academic risks, and provide them with a safe environment in which to explore their individual strengths.
Teachers at Country Day are well-trained to meet the needs of students of varying learning styles, and to help them to reach their greatest potential. Our low student-teacher ratio ensures quality communication and much individual attention for each student. One measure of academic success is through the Duke University Talent Identification Program, for which a significant portion of our 7th graders qualify every year. We take pride in knowing each individual student well, and giving students guidance and encouragement to achieve their personal best.
Our new buildings foster opportunities for students to work independently and cooperatively, as well as across disciplines, to maximize their learning potential. The impressive new Middle School classrooms and science laboratories support creative problem-solving, and provide the room necessary for innovative curriculum planning. Students also have access to a state-of-the-art language laboratory and extensive research materials and resources through the library and technology departments.
To support the advisory program, we are also fortunate to have on campus a learning specialist and counselor. The learning specialist works with faculty and students to outline strategies for students’ academic success, while the middle school counselor is a trained social worker who offers support and guidance necessary for students to be happy and successful in the school social environment.
We seek to enhance middle school students’ academic experience through a number of service learning activities and field trips to expand their understanding of the world beyond the Country Day community. As part of the Diverse Voices Program, 7th graders partner with the New Orleans Charter Middle School (NOCMS) on shared field trips, which are followed by writing and other creative arts activities. The 8th grade class takes a trip off-campus each year, providing them with a wonderful class bonding experience that also enriches their classroom study. Besides these special events, the majority of Country Day middle school students also take part in athletics, music, and drama activities, which allow them to show off their diverse talents outside of the classroom.
In the Middle School, students are given the freedom to explore their unique strengths and interests, and are given appropriate challenges to further their academic, athletic, and moral growth. As a foundation for all of their learning experiences, the school’s Honor System maintains a high level of expectations for academic integrity and character. The combination of academic, athletic, social, and moral education in this beautiful campus setting make the Middle School at Country Day an especially vibrant community in which our students flourish.
